Ultra Sparc CPU

This is my second Sun machine, and my
third SPARC machine. Smiley was purchased after some very bad experiences
I had installing a Penguin card on Sparky. The card did not fit properly
in the PCI riser, and needed to be rocked. It also came part way out of
the slot, when I tightened the screw on the backplane. Eventually it killed
something on the Sparky motherboard, and a new motherboard needed to be
ordered. I had originally ordered Smiley, because the price was right, and
he was a stripped down machine, having no hard drive. My plan was to use
him as a parts machine for Sparky, to get a replacement motherboard, and
strip out the ram. Smiley was actually cheaper than the cost of a new motherboard,
and extra ram. I happened to have an old 120gb drive laying around the house,
and Smiley was brought to life, in order to test all of the parts. Everything
went so smoothly, and ran so well that I could not bring myself to kill Smiley,
having brought him to life. Fortunately, a vendor was selling Sun Ultra motherboards
pretty cheaply, so I ordered one to use in the ailing Sparky. I now have
four Unix machines on my network.
Smiley has led a harder life than Sparky, being quite
scuffed up, and fairly dirty. Once I decided to keep this machine, I needed
to give it a good cleaning. This along with the hard drives, a bit more
memory, and installing the penguin card (successfully, this time), were
all that was required. Smiley is now on my network, and is helping me to
learn about clustering, and interconnection, between multiple Unix
machines, and windows machines.
Smiley is presently running Solaris 10, in 64 bit mode,
as its main OS, and is also running Windows 2000 on its coprocessor
card. I have Netscape, as well as Star Office on this machine. Though
Smiley is a different machine, and is set up a bit differently, more
details can be found on my page about Sparky. This page will be updated
sometime this spring.
